G7 Climate, Energy and Environment Ministers’ Communiqué include avoided emissions

For the first time G7 acknowledges avoided emissions. And not only this, they specifically highlighted the need to ensure that smaller companies are not excluded in the work. The G7 leaders are not used to the idea of a solution agenda and the structure of the statement is based on the old scope 1-3 thinking, but they finally acknowledged that "there is also value in acknowledging the contribution of a certain entity to emission reductions of other entities by providing decarbonisation solutions in a given system, in other words “avoided emissions”While a significant step it is important that the focus is on the required system shifts in line with IPCCs P1/Low-Energy-Demand pathway, not a simple product substitution approach with focus on existing sectors.
