Mission Innovation Ministerial MI-9 with the G20 Energy Ministers
There is a growing recognition that the climate/sustainability and innovation agendas must expand from a focus on current sectors and emission reductions to solution providers that can deliver on human needs in globally sustainable ways. During the last five years RISE, through the Net-Zero Compatibility Initiative (NCI), together with Social Alpha, have led the accelerator work with a focus on incubators in Mission Innovation. During that time a network has been created with a focus on those incubators that focus on global sustainability and human needs, rather than improving current systems through a sector approach. At COP28, representatives from Sweden, India, Brazil and Ethiopia gathered, along with contributions from the UK, to share thoughts about the possibilities for a traditional stakeholder to move towards a human need driven agenda.
Chaired by Jay Hennessy, Director of the Net-Zero Compatibility Initiative, the speakers were:
- Massamba Thioye, Project Executive, UNFCCC Global Innovation Hub
- Pourya Salehi, Head of Urban Research, Innovation and Development, ICLEI
- Diana Urge-Vorsatz, Vice Chair of the IPCC
- Dennis Pamlin, Executive Director of the Net-Zero Compatibility Initiative and Senior Advisor, RISE
- Smita Rakesh, Vice President, Social Alpha, India
- Andreas Johansson, Vice President of Market and Business Development, RISE Research Institutes of Sweden
- Niclas Carlsson, Head of International Market Development and Investment, Swedish Energy Agency
- Leandro Costa, Head of Innovation, Park Tech, São José dos Capos, Brazil
- Marvin Henry, Lead for Avoided Emissions, WBCSD
- Marika Takatani & Haruka Kasai, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan
- Gabriela Herculano, Co-Founder of iClima, UK
The aim was to:
- share best practices regarding the transition from static problem innovation to dynamic solution innovation,
- compare frameworks to assess avoided emissions, 1.5 C compatibility as well as compatibility with a future where 11 billion can live flourishing lives, and
- explore joint initiatives with cities and companies that focus on start-ups that can deliver globally sustainable solutions.
